Very sad news to share this evening for Chicago baseball fans, as former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks revealed that he is battling stage four stomach cancer.

— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) February 15, 2025Jenks, 43, was dominant in the mid-2000s, and closed out the 2005 World Series win for the White Sox. He is remembered fondly by pretty much any White Sox fan you talk to. He was remarkably candid with MLB.com about his situation, describing exactly what has happened to him throughout the diagnosis and treatment process, and also laying it out for others to consider in the future:
“You know, the shit I was doing in my 20s and early 30s, no normal person would have survived,” said Jenks, mincing no words as is his custom. “So, in one way, I’m grateful to be alive. In another way, I’m not surprised this happened. It goes to show you have to take care of yourself from top to bottom with nutrition and exercise and having a good daily plan.
“I’m not saying you need to turn yourself into a Greek god, but you need to watch what you put into your body. Unfortunately, in my 20s, it was the last thing on my mind, being worried about what was going in. I’m not saying that’s 100 percent the factor of what happened here.”
But Jenks is going to fight from here, and even as he can still the Cubs (“Momma didn’t raise no Cubs fan here”), I’ll still pull for him. I always really enjoyed watching him pitch.
