In October 2020, Apple announced the release of their MagSafe charger for iPhone. This charger is very basic and features a MagSafe-compatible Qi charging puck attached to a USB-C cable. While they work well and are efficient chargers, they are not currently compatible with Qi2 wireless charging technology. Fortunately, there are some third-party alternatives like the ESR HaloLock Qi2 Mini Wireless Charger.

User Experience

Unboxing the ESR HaloLock Qi2 Mini Wireless Charger was easy enough. Since it isn’t a device that comes with any accessories, I was able to pull the charger with its cable attached out of the box and then I looked at the manual. The truth is, there isn’t much in the way of setup. Once you take it out of the box, you plug it into an appropriate power adapter and then place your phone on it.

I really like the design of this MagSafe-compatible charger. It’s compact and the cable that is attached is flexible and covered with fabric, which I’ve found to be more durable. The cable plug is reinforced to help with repeated use. The charger also has a velcro cable strap that comes with it so you can keep the cable neat and organized.

As far as charging goes, it seems to be very efficient. I had my iPhone 16 Pro charging on it for approximately 20 minutes and I had a charging rate of 0.42% per minute. While that seems as though it’s not very high for a Qi2 charger, I noticed that my phone was over 85% when I completed the charging test. That means that Apple’s trickle charging mode had come into play. When that happens, the charging rate slows down until the battery reaches 100%. This happens to help preserve the battery and device’s circuits.

I recently reviewed a different charger where my iPhone charged past 80% during the charging test and the charging rate was 0.57% per minute. So I’m not at all disappointed with the charging rate I got. In addition to the actual charging performance, the charging puck did not seem to get warm at all.

Conclusion

The ESR HaloLock Qi2 Mini Wireless Charger is a well-designed, efficient, and travel-friendly charging solution for Qi2-compatible devices. With its strong MagSafe-compatible magnets, durable fabric-covered cable, and compact form factor, it offers a seamless user experience. While it delivers solid charging performance, its speed may slightly vary due to Apple’s built-in battery management. Overall, for those looking for a reliable and budget-friendly Qi2 charger, this is a great option.
