Just kidding. These events have nothing to do with each other. The Cubs apparently felt they needed some additional infield depth at Triple-A (is everyone healthy?), and they’ve signed old friend Dixon Machado to a minor league deal, per the team transaction wire.
Machado, 33 later this month, spent the last two seasons primarily playing at Triple-A in the Astros organization. Before that, you might recall he spent much of the 2022 season at Triple-A Iowa with the Cubs, before moving on to the Giants’ organization. He is not going to do much at the plate at this point, but he plays good defense at all the infield spots, and is the kind of versatile veteran depth that’s worth having at Triple-A so that you can better manage how/when you use your prospects.
