AN Aldi shopper appears to have been left bemused by a store’s decision to roll out self-checkouts.

The customer struggled to hide their anger after spotting one major problem following their trip to the low-cost budget retailer.

A shopper complained about how a lack of self-checkouts impacted their trip to the storeGetty Aldi responded following the customer’s less than ideal experienceReuters

And, their ordeal even prompted an Aldi representative to apologize within days.

“I just want to know why Aldi removed almost all checkout lanes to add self-checkout when self-checkout is never open?” they fumed.

They were left disappointed by what played out in-store.

“Now we have two working lanes and endless lines. So annoying,” they said.

An Aldi representative apologized for the checkout chaos.

“We’re so sorry to hear your checkout experience hasn’t been the most efficient lately!” they said.

The spokesperson invited the customer to share their feedback by completing an online form.

It’s unclear if the shopper ever complied with the supermarket giant’s request.

The U.S. Sun has approached Aldi for comment regarding checkout efficiency.

Self-checkouts are hailed for their convenience and have been adopted by small and major grocery chains.

The kiosks are a go-to for shoppers who want to be in and out of stores quickly.

But, as the machines grew more popular, customers turned to the kiosks as their preferred method of checkout.

And, this trend appears to have had an impact on efficiency.

Certain retailers across the US have imposed policies to ensure self-service machines remain an efficient tool.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

Target has come under intense scrutiny and criticism from customers who have been left puzzled by execs decision to implement a 10-item limit.

Shoppers have complained about social media about how they’ve had to navigate lengthy lines.

Furious customers have lashed out at workers over their overzealous style when it comes to enforcing the policy.

Some have claimed that workers have counted items in carts just to ensure the policy is being adhered to.

Schnucks, a smaller retailer compared to Target, also has a self-checkout policy in place.

When the policy was rolled out in February 2024, customers could only check out a maximum of 10 items.

The rule has since been relaxed and the limit is 15 items.
