Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was pretty epic.

Yes, that was Serena Williams dancing mid-Super Bowl halftime show.
What was she doing there? Well, like Kendrick, she’s from Compton and previously dated Drake. She was likely there to also metaphorically dance on Drake’s grave after the rapper made shady comments about her husband.
2. Kendrick Lamar trolling Drake with a witty lawsuit dig

The trolling of Drake didn’t stop with just Serena. Minutes earlier in Kendrick’s Super Bowl set, he trolled Drake’s lawsuits the Canadian rapper dropped over “Not Like Us.”
“I want to perform their favorite song, but you know they love to sue,” Lamar said before jumping to another track.

3. Kendrick Lamar opening his Super Bowl set with an unreleased song snippet

In case you were wondering why the opening song of Kendrick’s halftime performance sounded unfamiliar, it’s an unreleased song.

4. Samuel L. Jackson’s guest appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show

Samuel L. Jackson’s guest appearance likely stunned viewers, but it was done with intention. Jackson played Uncle Sam, a.k.a. the government. “Salutations! It’s your uncle, Sam,” he said. “And this is the great American game.”
Jackson’s lines throughout the performance were full of metaphors and deeper meanings, which included instructions for people to pay more attention to what the government does and how it has operated in the past.

Remember that cool American flag Kendrick’s dancers created around him? Yeah, it was a lot deeper than just using people for on-camera imagery.
It was meant to symbolize how America, despite claiming to be together, is still divided—hence, he’s standing in the middle of the group.

Kendrick Lamar’s whole set was made to mimic the symbols on a PlayStation controller.
According to Forbes’ Paul Tassi, the controller-inspired set was Kendrick’s idea. He intended to portray his life as one big video game.

Kendrick Lamar quite literally played peekaboo with the audience at home during his song, “Peakaboo.”
He popped into the camera’s frame just before the word peekaboo drops.

9. Kendrick Lamar’s blue leather jacket nod to his GNX album

Even Kendrick Lamar’s clothing was chosen with intention. The rapper came out sporting a blue leather zip-up jacket.
On it was the word “gloria” in giant letters. “Gloria” is the last song on his GNX album, which features SZA, who joined him for his show.
