Four Super Bowl Participants Who Make Sense as Bears Free Agent Targets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The sooner Super Bowl LIX ends, the sooner we can throw ourselves fully into what figures to be another fascinating offseason for the Chicago Bears. Perhaps Sunday’s showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will feature some players who are future Bears. And maybe the addition of one (or two) of these players could one day elevate Chicago’s football team to Super Bowl glory.

We have got a long way to go before we get to that bridge, let alone cross it. But still … I will have my eyes on these players during today’s Super Bowl who would make sense as potential Bears free agency targets.

Potential Chicago Bears free agency targets playing in Super Bowl LIX

Trey Smith, Kansas City Chiefs lineman

If Trey Smith makes it to free agency, he will be *THE* biggest prize for any team seeking to upgrade its offensive line in a major way. Smith is coming off a Pro Bowl season and is still only 25 (and won’t turn 26 until June). The Bears are reportedly “all-in” on fixing their offensive line problems after hiring Ben Johnson as their new head coach. At least one NFL insider sees the Bears as a team to watch in free agency for Smith, whose situation is worth keeping tabs on this offseason.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO FIX THE BEARS’ OFFENSIVE LINE?

Should Smith make it to free agency, the Bears should be first in line to give the talented right guard a blank check. And if Kansas City gives him the Franchise Tag treatment with the intent to trade Smith, then Chicago should still inquire about making a move and be willing to cut a deal if the price is right.

Mekhi Becton, Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman

If the Bears would rather spread the wealth among several positions, then perhaps Mekhi Becton makes sense as an alternative to Trey Smith — especially if Smith does not make it to free agency. Becton, a first-round pick by the New York Jets in 2020, has found his groove in Philly. The 6-foot-7-inch, 363-pound offensive lineman has transitioned successfully from being viewed as the Jets’ future left tackle to the Eagles’ studly right guard. Becton’s career arc has been fun to follow from afar. And if the 25-year-old guard were to land in Chicago, it could be fun to see its next steps.

Josh Sweat, Philadelphia Eagles edge defender

When my eyes aren’t fixated on Trey Smith, they should be on Josh Sweat. Philadelphia’s top pass rusher is a menace to quarterbacks. Sweat is coming off a season in which he collected 8 sacks, 15 quarterback hits, and 9 tackles-for-loss in 16 games. Since 2021, Sweat has averaged 8 sacks, 19 quarterback hits, and 10 tackles for loss per season. Putting him opposite of Montez Sweat could help bolster a Bears defensive line that didn’t get to the quarterback with any consistency in 2024. I can see Dennis Allen, the team’s new defensive coordinator, banging the table for a new pass rusher.

Joshua Uche, Chiefs edge defender

The Bears could surmise that throwing waves of different defenders at the defensive end spot opposite of Montez Sweat is the best way to go about fixing their pass rush problems. At a minimum, Chicago could plug the gap by using one of its first three picks on a defensive end and pairing a developing rookie with an established veteran stopgap. With that in mind, I find Joshua Uche to be an interesting target. In 2022, Uche picked up 11.5 sacks, 14 quarterback hits, and 9 tackles for loss. But in the two years since, Uche has just 5 sacks, 9 QB hits, and 5 TFLs in 28 games.

Uche wouldn’t be a splash signing. But he could be one of those one-year “prove it” lottery ticket deals that cash out.

Estimated contract via Pro Football Focus: 1 year, $4.5 million total, $3 million guaranteed
