The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is planning additional patrols to look for impaired drivers during Super Bowl Sunday, the agency announced this week.

The patrols will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, the agency said in a release.

The department also posted the following tips for a safe Super Bowl Sunday:

• Plan a safe way home before the game begins• Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home• If you’re impaired, use a taxi, ride-sharing service, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation• If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 9-1-1 immediately

The Sheriff’s Office added that prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair drivers, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs.

Last year, 6,664 drivers were held on suspicion of impaired driving in the county, the office said. A total of 25 people were arrested for impaired driving during Super Bowl Sunday 2024.

Funding for the Super Bowl impaired driving enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
