The members-only wholesaler sells goods in large quantities, but some think there should be limits.

Costco consumers are debating over eggs on social mediaAlamy

The high cost of groceries, and eggs in particular, has led some stores to place limits on the number of packages of eggs one customer can buy.

SHOPPERS SCRAMBLING

Shoppers have posted videos on social media showing that some are struggling to find eggs.

Others are buying large quantities of eggs when they do find them.

This could be due to panic-buying or stocking up.

One such video, posted on X on February 6, showed an apparent dispute around a customer with a cart full of eggs.

People can be seen making physical contact as the camera person records a cart loaded with hundreds of eggs.

Commenters asked for a limit on egg purchases in response to the video.

“WTF are they going to do with 800+ eggs?” one commented. “Costco needs a limit policy.”

Some X users said it could be a legitimate purchase.

“Could be a restaurant owner,” one said.

Others thought something more suspicious was afoot.

“You people don’t realize there’s things called flea markets,” one claimed. “These people could take 10 cases to 10 different flea markets and they’ll need 100 cases and they’ll make 10 bucks off each case times 100. That’s 1000 bucks.”

Some said their local Costcos are already enforcing some limits.

EGGFLATION

The price of eggs has made headlines in recent weeks.

After a contentious presidential race where grocery prices were a top issue, some say the new Trump administration has done little to directly bring down inflation so far.

While inflation overall has gone down since its peak in 2022, many fear that tariffs, like the steep trade barriers President Trump has promised for Mexico and Canada next month, could further fuel inflation.

But there are specific reasons for high egg costs. Significantly, a bird flu outbreak has led to a shortage of eggs, spiking prices.

That means some stores are already placing limits on how many eggs you can get at once.

Kroger is limiting some egg purchases.

Lidl has made a similar move.

The company said it “may” place limits on high-demand products.

Trader Joe’s may also stop you from buying too many eggs.

Trader Joe’s was recently blasted for limiting sales on a different product — mini totes.
