ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Officials and police departments around the Atlanta area are sending their condolences after a Roswell police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday night.

Roswell police said officers went to a shopping center off Market Boulevard at around 7 p.m. in response to a call about a “suspicious person.” An officer found the suspect behind the center, and the suspect shot him multiple times, according to police.

The officer was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The suspect was immediately taken into custody, according to police.

As of Saturday morning, the officer and suspect have not been identified.

Several politicians took to social media to mourn the officer. Gov. Brian Kemp said he and his family are praying for the officer’s loved ones.

“We join them, his fellow Roswell PD, and all law enforcement in mourning this sudden and heartbreaking loss, and we ask all Georgians to join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers,” he said. “We also ask that we remain mindful of the heavy sacrifices law enforcement and their families make to keep all of us safe each and every day. May this courageous man’s memory inspire all of us in the days, weeks, and years ahead.”

John King, Georgia’s insurance and safety fire commissioner and a former police chief himself, said his heart goes out to the officer’s family and loved ones.

“Let’s also pray for the safety of those who put their lives on the line to keep us safe across Georgia and our nation,” he said.

Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the Law Enforcement Officer who was lost in Roswell, as well as the entire Roswell Police Department.

Fellow law enforcement agencies are also speaking out.

“No words seem appropriate,” the Marietta Police Department said on its Facebook page.

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said their hearts are broken for their fellow law enforcement officers.

“Please keep Roswell Police, their community, and the family and friends of the fallen officer in your thoughts and prayers,” the statement said.

The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety also said they are heartbroken, while the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office “extends our heartfelt condolences.”
