San Diego Democrats raised objections Friday to actions by President Donald Trump, prompting one to decry what he called the “great billionaire takeover” of government.
Rep. Juan Vargas joined Rep. Mark Takano (D-Riverside), who was one of a large group of legislators denied access to the Department of Education in Washington D.C.
Takano on Thursday had led 96 Congressional colleagues, all Democrats, including San Diego Rep. Scott Peters, in sending a letter to the department’s acting secretary, Denise Carter. They sought a meeting over what they called Trump’s plans “to illegally dismantle or drastically reduce the department through Executive Order.”
They demanded “a discussion of what such a reduction of the department would entail, including which programs would be cut, which would be moved into the jurisdiction of other agencies, and the projected impact of those changes on Americans across the country.”
Takano, at a news conference outside the department after security personnel refused to allow his group into the building, said Carter had yet to respond.
“We will not cede the responsibility for our future generations to one man, his ideology and his unelected lieutenants,” the former public school teacher said.
Another local member of Congress, Rep. Mike Levin – whose district includes parts of both San Diego and Orange counties – took that veiled reference to Elon Musk further on the floor of the House.
The new Department of Government Efficiency, led by Musk, in its push to find ways to reduce the federal workforce, cut programs and slash federal regulations, has raised concerns that Musk’s team is withholding funds appropriated by Congress to suit the president’s political agenda.
Levin said the effort shows that the Trump administration is trying to “usurp Congress’s Constitutional authority of the power of the purse.”
He accused Trump of “flouting the law” and “unleashing the beginnings of a Constitutional crisis.” He also again targeted Musk, a man he has taken to calling “the unelected billionaire-in-chief.”
“Everything that is happening is leading to one thing: the Great Billionaire Takeover of our government to line the pockets of the very few,” Levin said. “This is not normal. This is not efficiency, and we cannot let this happen.”
The lone Republican member of San Diego’s congressional delegation, Rep Darrell Issa, (R-Escondido), mocked both the Democrats’ attempt to enter the Department of Education and criticism of Musk’s department.
“Here’s what’s happening: @elonmusk and DOGE are asking where the federal government is spending your tax dollars,” Issa wrote on the Musk-owned platform, X. “And Democrats are hysterical about it.”
