February 3, 2025 (KADUGLI) – At least 44 people were killed and dozens wounded on Monday in a shelling attack in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state, the state health minister said. Jawaher Ahmed Suleiman said the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA-North), led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, was responsible for the attack, which targeted a market and residential areas. The SPLA-North could not immediately be reached for comment. Fighting has escalated in South Kordofan in recent weeks. On Jan. 15, the SPLA-North accused the Sudanese army of attacking its positions near Dilling, the second-largest city in the state, and of committing abuses against civilians. South Kordofan Governor Mohamed Ibrahim, who visited the injured, condemned the attack, saying it aimed to destabilize the region and was a violation of human rights. He vowed to continue military operations to “clear all the mountains surrounding the city, expel the SPLA forces, and open the Kadugli-Dilling road.” Suleiman said 28 people were also injured in the shelling and that hospitals in Kadugli were prepared to treat casualties.
