February 3, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese army said on Monday it had broken a siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on its garrison in the town of al-Aylafun, east of the capital Khartoum. The RSF overran al-Aylafun, about 30 km (19 miles) east of Khartoum, in October 2023, forcing thousands of residents to flee. The RSF faced accusations of looting homes, shops and civilian vehicles and of arresting dozens of people. The army’s Corps of Engineers base in the area held out against repeated RSF attacks despite being cut off from supplies. Abu Aqla Keikel, commander of the Sudan Shield Forces, an army-allied group, said in a video that his forces, along with an intelligence unit and another army contingent, had linked up with the al-Aylafun garrison, effectively ending the siege. Keikel said the army planned to advance towards the Soba Bridge, a key crossing connecting the eastern part of the capital with the city centre, where RSF forces are heavily deployed.
