Amidst uncertainty for transgender members of the armed forces, elected officials are fighting to protect their basic rights.
Last week, Rep. Scott Peters doubled down on his commitment to the military community, supporting fellow Democratic Rep. Sara Jacobs’ Ensuring Military Readiness Not Discrimination Act, which proposes to amend the United States Code to prohibit discrimination in the U.S. military.
“Unlike Trump’s original ban, this executive order will also remove currently serving transgender service members who have demonstrated their commitment to the United States on the battlefield. It is wrong and it is a disgrace,” Peters said in a statement.
“Our military must be focused on readiness for war and not the culture wars, and there is no evidence Trump’s original ban did anything to improve our military readiness or our national security.”
In a RAND study commissioned by the Pentagon in 2015, the results found that allowing transgender people to serve within the military was not an inhibitor of unit cohesion or operational readiness.
During Trump’s first term in office, Peters led an amendment to the Department of Defense appropriations bill to block his initial efforts to bar transgender people from serving in the military.
Trump was able to bar transgender individuals from enlisting and those serving from receiving gender-affirming care.
While this ban was lifted when Biden took office, Trump is attempting to reinstate it — and perhaps go even farther, as this executive order may result in trans service members being booted from the military and the loss of their retirement benefits.
The details of how this order will be implemented remain unclear. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has 30 days to submit a plan to carry out the order.
