ExpandCapo Valley can clinch the outright league championship with a win over El Toro on Monday. If the Cougars lose to El Toro, there will be a two-way tie for the league championship, as the Cougars would share it with Aliso Niguel (19-8, 5-3).
“I’m super proud of these guys,” Cougars coach Brian Mulligan said. “It’s absolutely huge because they (Aliso Niguel) are an elite shooting team and we handled that well. Our length is good and our brains are generally good and I’m super happy to come away with this one.”
The numbers back up Mulligan’s statement about handling Aliso Niguel’s shooting. Capo Valley held Aliso Niguel to just 11 points in the first half and the Wolverines made just 2 of 14 3-point attempts in the half.
Aliso Niguel made its first two 3-pointers of the game which prompted Mulligan to take a timeout. The Wolverines missed their next 14 3-point attempts and Capo went on a 20-4 run to close the first half.
In the first matchup between the two teams on Jan. 17, Aliso Niguel erased an 18-point deficit by making six consecutive 3-pointers in a 20-0 run. The Cougars avoided a run like that Friday.
“I called a quick timeout and said ‘we are not going to do this again tonight guys,’” Mulligan said. “They are a team that we think six guys on a given night can make five 3s on you. We were better this game about being OK giving up twos as long as we stuck with the shooters.”
Capo Valley dominated the game inside with its size and rebounding. The Cougars had 36 rebounds compared to 21 for Aliso Niguel and scored 24 points in the paint compared to 16 for the Wolverines.
Jake Davis led the Cougars with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Darius Turner had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“We have big guys and they don’t have traditional big guys and our guys took care of business,” Mulligan said. “That’s what we do.”
Gabe Williams added 15 points for the Cougars, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. He made the lone 3-point basket for Capo Valley, which shot 1 of 15 from 3-point range.
Aliso Niguel cut the lead to five points in the fourth quarter but was unable to get the late stops it needed defensively.
Jayden Mysin led Aliso Niguel with 13 points and Wyatt Richmond added eight. 5-foot-8 freshman Collin Tjin had six of his eight points come in the paint and had two blocked shots.
The Cougars lost to El Toro 55-45 on Jan. 22, and Mulligan expects a tough matchup when the teams meet again Monday. He also expects the Cougars to play better than they did in the first game.
“El Toro is a tough matchup for us, but having a piece of the league title right now is super cool,” Mulligan said. “There is zero chance El Toro just lays down, and I’m going to tell you that there is zero chance that we will be as careless with the ball as we were the first time against them.”
Aliso Niguel wraps its regular season with a nonleague game at Trabuco Hills on Tuesday. The Wolverines have already clinched an automatic playoff spot from the Sea View League.
