MONTEREY — Much of the Bay Area will be under a flood watch this weekend as a storm system rolls through the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch will take effect Friday afternoon and run through Sunday evening, the weather service said in a bulletin Thursday.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible in the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Sonoma.

Around 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected across the region by Sunday afternoon, and some higher elevations could see up to 5 inches, according to the weather service.

The weather service urged residents to monitor the forecast and be alert for possible flood warnings.

“Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop,” the weather service said.
