Puckett, 29, pitched in the minor leagues with the Royals (second round draft pick), White Sox, Braves, and Mariners from 2016 through 2023, not quite able to get past the jump from Double-A to Triple-A, whether starting or relieving.
He spent the last year pitching extremely well in relief in the Mexican League and then the Mexican Winter League, and although you can’t assume the dominant results there will translate, it’s also not necessarily the easiest offensive environment in which to pitch. And sometimes a thing or two clicks for a guy when he goes to play internationally.
That said, the signing is probably at least as much about the work Puckett has done at Tread, where the Cubs presumably got some extra insights via Tyler Zombro. Although Puckett is 29, you can still think of him more like a true minor league signing. He may even start the year out at Double-A Knoxville, just so the Cubs can see where he’s at.
You always like a four-pitch mix and a mid-90s fastball, though. Good bones to work with.
