Padres Ownership Fight Continues, But They Did Make One Signing ...Middle East

The Padres’ ownership fight continues, with the late Peter Seidler’s brothers responding to his widow Sheel Seidler’s lawsuit about who should be the team’s designated control person (well, the suit is about a lot more than that, but that’s the part we care most about around here). You can read the particulars in the docket for the case if you’re interested, but it looks to me a whole lot like most of these kinds of complicated, contractual, financial cases look in the pleadings: each side has a very clear story of what happened and what it means and where it should go, each sounds totally reasonable, and each is in complete conflict with the other. Anyone not directly involved in the case and working on it for hundreds of hours is going to look a fool trying to opine on it. I choose not to look a fool.

It is highly likely that this case settles eventually, but in the meantime, there’s no way it isn’t impacting the baseball side. Heck, the response in the lawsuit all but suggests that some of the original allegations could have impacted the Padres’ ability to successfully recruit Roki Sasaki. Whatever the situation, regardless of who is right and/or who will win, this thing is a problem for the Padres’ baseball operations.

There are also lingering financial questions. There was already a question about future spending after Peter’s passing – his unique passion and largesse drove a lot of the increases in payroll in recent years – and after the loss of the team’s TV deal, but throw in an ownership fight? How much money does A.J. Preller really have to use this offseason? Any? Negative money?

All that is to say, I still expect the Padres to enter the 2025 season with payroll down, and they have so far done nothing to cut anything from payroll, nor much of anything to add to the roster.

But they did make one signing to cover a spot of need, bringing back catcher Elias Diaz on a one-year, $3.5 million deal. There are still holes in the rotation and in the outfield, though:

Still, that’s a plausibly competitive team overall, which is probably why they’re considering trading a good player or two in his walk year (including starter Michael King (and reliever Robert Suarez would be a mighty nice target, too, just saying)), figuring they might be able to thread the needle between competing and falling way off.

We’ll see what else the Padres can pull off over the next few weeks in spite of the ownership fight, which doesn’t figure to be resolved by the time the team kicks off Spring Training.
