Sean Payton wants employees wanted by other teams. When no one is calling about your people, the inference is, you probably have the wrong people.
So it should come as no surprise that with the Broncos’ success, other teams have taken notice. Saturday afternoon, the New York Jets agreed in principle to make Darren Mougey their new general manager, a source confirmed to The Post.

A former college tight end at San Diego State, Mougey began his post-NFL career as a scouting intern for the Broncos in 2012. He earned multiple promotions under former GM John Elway before becoming Paton’s right-hand man despite the two not having a working relationship when Paton took over.
Mougey has forged a reputation for his scouting chops and work in the draft. When looking at the Broncos’ 2024 success — they snapped an eight-year playoff drought and a streak of seven consecutive losing seasons — it is impossible to ignore the impact of hand-picked players. Cornerback Pat Surtain II is the favorite to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. And edge rusher Nik Bonitto and returner Marvin Mims Jr. earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. Other contributors include outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper and second-year cornerback Riley Moss.
Mougey remained hands-on in his role under Paton. It was not uncommon to see him out scouting college games, including going out a day early to watch CU play at Kansas before the Broncos faced the Chiefs. His hard work helped build the current competitive roster.
Mougey had previously told The Post he felt good about his chances with the Jets after his first interview. He was named one of three finalists and won out with his second interview on Thursday. Josina Anderson first reported on Friday that Mougey had landed the job.
Mougey will aim to end the Jets’ 14-year playoff drought, the longest active streak in the NFL. At 39, Mougey is two years younger than Jets current starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose future with the team remains uncertain.
