Off he goes. One of the more fun Chicago Cubs players in recent memory, done in by his elbow, Adbert Alzolay is off to join another organization. Per Will Sammon of The Athletic on X, Alzolay is signing a two-year minor league deal with the New York Mets.
Because of his late-season Tommy John surgery, he’ll be rehabbing for most of the year, and now the Mets will have the opportunity to deploy him late in the season and/or in 2026. It’s basically the deal we’d hoped the Cubs would sign Alzolay to, but maybe he found the Mets’ offer more compelling, or maybe the Cubs were content to move on.
Either way, it’s a sad moment. Alzolay, signed by the Cubs when he was just 17, had been in the organization for well over a decade. Loved watching that dude compete, with flashes of brilliance, outbursts of exuberance, and stretches where he seemed unhittable.
All the best to Adbert Alzolay on his rehab journey, and then in what comes next. Mets got a good one.
