If left untreated, smaller clots can break loose from a DVT and travel to the lungs, where they may cause a pulmonary embolism (PE), a potentially fatal condition that causes more severe symptoms like a sudden onset of difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, coughing up blood and more.
