During a recent morning devotional, Noemi Bravo, education and career development coordinator at the San Diego Rescue Mission, celebrated six residents who completed the Coast to Crest Trail Challenge.
The challenge, organized by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, involves a series of five hikes across the San Dieguito River watershed.
“These six individuals really climbed the mountain,” Bravo said, likening their journey to the biblical story of Moses ascending Mt. Sinai.
“Pushing through to the peak of the mountain is where you get the best view of life,” said Bravo, who also completed the challenge.
Participants received certificates and gifts as recognition for their achievement, which aligns with the homeless services organization’s recovery program. The curriculum includes wellness activities such as group hiking to build confidence, resilience and community, organizers said.
One participant, Rita, said she appreciated the support of her fellow hikers and thatthanks to being sober, she was able to feel every emotion and every muscle during thehikes.
“It was rough,” she said. “My body’s not used to it.”
The collaboration between the conservancy and faith-based nonprofit reflects a shared beliefin the transformative power of nature.
San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy Executive Director Cheryl Goddard attended theceremony and praised the participants for their accomplishments.
“The Coast to Crest Trail Challenge isn’t easy,” Goddard told the group. “It takes grit anddetermination. It’s a powerful reminder that every step forward matters — on the trail andin life.”
