India National Cricket Team unveiled their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday (18th January). The focus was on the vice-captain of the team, and it was none other than Gill, who was given the role to be the deputy of Rohit Sharma for the tournament.
Few reports claimed that Jasprit Bumrah would be named as the vice-captain of the team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, especially after his heroics with the ball and as a captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. But that wasn't the case.
I won't look into it much but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room - Ajit Agarkar on naming Shubman Gill vice-captain
While talking about Gill being named as the vice-captain, he said that the young batter was vice-captain in Sri Lanka, and they took dressing room feedback in making the decision. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
Shubman Gill has developed himself as one of the best openers for the team in a short span of time, has 2328 runs in 47 innings
Shubman Gill arguably has developed himself as one of the best openers for the team in short span of time. He has scored 2328 one-day international (ODI) runs in 47 innings with an average of 58.20. He will be extremely important for his team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 while batting at the top.
