Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood stops by to discuss local law enforcement at the start of the new year. First, Sheriff Blackwood shares his thoughts about HB10, the “sheriffs must cooperate with ICE” measure that passed last year and took effect this month: he says his office already cooperates with federal officials, but HB10 mandates a specific procedure that’s unnecessary (and potentially unconstitutional) and places the entire cost burden on the county. Blackwood also discusses positive and negative trends in law enforcement: the crime rate overall is actually down, but there’s been a spike in domestic violence calls and fentanyl-related issues. And Blackwood gets the word out about various initiatives within the sheriff’s office to help residents in need – including a sock donation drive that’s ongoing now through Valentine’s Day.
