Justin Verlander will indeed continue his career into his age-42 season, and it’s probably a pretty good landing spot for him if he’s looking to pad his already-Hall of Fame resume.
From Jeff Passan:
BREAKING: Right-hander Justin Verlander and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a one-year contract, pending physical, sources tell ESPN. The future Hall of Famer, who turns 42 next month, will spend his 20th season with the Giants.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 7, 2025Verlander, who managed just 90.1 mostly unsuccessful innings last year with the Astros due to injury, will head out to San Francisco to pitch for the Giants. It’s a perfectly fine fit for both sides, though it’s unlikely to be the difference for a Giants club that has to compete against the juggernaut Dodgers in the NL West, together with the Padres and Diamondbacks, both of whom figure to be easy Wild Card contenders.
Then again, I probably shouldn’t bet against Verlander, who returned from Tommy John surgery to put up a 2.45 ERA in his ages-39 and 40 seasons. Maybe last year will prove to have been a blip, and the guy will just keep on cruising in 2025.
The Cubs weren’t in on Verlander’s market according to any rumors I saw, nor are they in on fellow quadragenarian Max Scherzer, who’ll also be looking to land a one-year deal to bounce back from a down and injured 2024 season.
