United Airlines plans to launch its first commercial flight with Starlink Wi-Fi this spring after accelerating its timeline for the new internet service, the company announced Sunday.
The carrier expects to have its entire two-cabin regional fleet outfitted with Starlink Wi-Fi by the end of the year. It also plans to fly its first Starlink-equipped mainline plane by the close of 2025.
The new satellite-based Wi-Fi will be free for members of United’s frequent flyer program, MileagePlus.
“We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can — as quickly as we can — is at the center of it all,” United MileagePlus CEO Richard Nunn said in a press release.
“It's not only going to revolutionize the experience of flying United, but it's also going to unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn't be possible,” he added.
United announced in September that it had signed an agreement with SpaceX to equip its entire fleet of more than 1,000 planes with Starlink Wi-Fi “over the next several years.” Starlink is a subsidiary of SpaceX, Elon Musk’s spacecraft and satellite communications company.
Several other airlines have signed deals with Starlink to offer in-flight Wi-Fi, including Hawaiian Airlines and Qatar Airways, which both launched service last year.
