The Ceramics Sculpture Class at Mendocino College is doing an innovative collaboration with the Agriculture Department to create a permanent Pomo Medicine Garden on the campus.

Luckily for the Corner Gallery, some of the ceramic pieces will be on display for the month of January in the Young Artist space before they go to their permanent homes in the Medicine Garden.

Wesley Wright, the ceramics instructor at the college, explains how the project came to be. “The Pomo Medicine Garden was originally the idea of Bonnie Lockhart, who is director of Student Life and Support at the college,” he says. “The Agriculture Department was already working on the project a year ago under the direction of Curt Voigt, and I sort of inserted the Ceramics Department into the mix because I really want my students to do public art either on campus or in some other public venue. I am interested in native species, and Curt heard about that… and we realized that we could work together.”

Wesley continues. “The folks in the Agriculture Department started with an outdoor installation of some story poles of native plant species, which were stacked as column sculptures made out of ceramic. When the Ceramics Department got talking to both the Ag Department and the Native American Club, we decided that we wanted some native animals to go with the native plants already in the garden. This was a great project for my students… 10 of them either worked individually or collaborated to create eight different animals, all of which will end up in the Pomo Medicine Garden after their debut at the Corner Gallery.”

The eight student-made animals, plus a large black bear created by Wesley, are set up on pedestals in the gallery so that viewers can wander through them and admire them from all sides. Among them are a raccoon, a pair of turkeys and a quail with a clutch of hatchlings.

The First Friday opening of “Native Species” will be on Jan. 3 from 5-8 p.m. Live guitar and vocal music will be provided throughout the evening by Obie. The Corner Gallery is located at 201 S. State St. in Ukiah.
