I’ve been speculating on the fit, but we hadn’t actually yet seen any reporting that the Cubs were in on Korean utility man Hyeseong Kim, whose posting period ends today.
Now we have:
?BREAKINGKim Hye-seong updateAccording to the Sunday Newspaper, a Korean newspaper outletKim has received offers fromSEALAALADSDCHIOffer is lower than expected (perhaps closer to 10M) though he is still expected to come to the MLB pic.twitter.com/701GAoZK7q
— KBO in English (@KBO_ENG) January 3, 2025The offers are not significant for the 25-year-old lefty-hitting infielder, roughly in line with what someone like Josh Rojas would get on an annual basis. That is to say, he is reportedly looking at receiving a deal commensurate with that of a solid bench player, not a starter-level deal.
Four West Coast teams and the Cubs there in that reported group of offers. If Kim is looking for his best path to starting, he probably won’t pick the Cubs, who’d use him as a true utility guy (though he might have a lot of starts early in the year if Matt Shaw isn’t ready, and/or if Nico Hoerner needs more time to ramp up post-surgery). That said, I’m not so sure he’ll become a clear starter with any club.
Still, I hope the Cubs land him if they are truly interested. He just seems like such a good bench option for the Cubs – even though you can’t easily project how well his offensive game will translate to the States, he plays great defense all over and runs well. It’s worth a relatively modest price to take a chance on a guy who may wind up being exactly what you need to complement the rest of this infield group (with all appropriate apologies to Vidal Brujan, whose future success in a bench role is not assured).
There is also probably some non-zero ancillary benefits to having a Korean star on your team.
Stay tuned, because we’ll find out today one way or another what’s happening with Hyeseong Kim. The rumors have the Dodgers, of course, as the favorite:
According to this article Kim has five offers. A: 3yr 10M/ B: 3+1 yr 12M/ C: 1+1 yr 3M/ D: 3yr less than 10M. Teams mentioned are Mariners, Padres, Dodgers, Cubs, and Angels. t.co/95bkrMVPY6
— Wesley117 (@Wesley11798) January 3, 2025According to a rumor, the Dodgers are the team that offered Kim 3 years with many options and are favorites to sign him. The Angels are darkhorse. This came up in a baseball community I use in Korea, and apparently, the person who told this rumor has some credentials.
