Cause released in south Charlotte apartment fire that killed one, injured firefighters ...Middle East

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The two-alarm fire that damaged an apartment complex in south Charlotte was deemed accidental, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Around 11:40 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, crews responded to the 8800 block of Park Road and saw heavy smoke from the roof as they arrived.

This is near the Quail Hollow neighborhood in south Charlotte.

A second alarm was quickly struck around 11:47 a.m. and the fire was brought under control around 12:30 p.m. Officials said the apartment building contained 12 units and homes 14 residents. The American Red Cross was dispatched to assist those displaced by the fire.

One person was killed at the scene and two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the flames. The firefighters were treated for minor injuries and have since been released.

Additionally, a firefighter rescued one animal from the building, which was safely returned to its owner. Investigators determined that the fire originated on the rear exterior third-floor balcony.

Officials said the fire was caused by an unattended burning candle in a flower planter box. The estimated property/content loss is $175,000.
