By Lex Harvey, CNN (CNN) — Anton van Helden, an expert on some of the world’s rarest whales, was sitting on the couch in July recovering from surgery, when a photo flashed on his phone that would change the course of his career. But this was no ordinary whale. “I immediately went, ‘Oh my goodness, it’s a spade-toothed whale!’” the senior marine science adviser for New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) told CNN. “A lot of people didn’t believe me,” he added.
