(KRON) -- The Alum Rock Union Elementary School District (ARUSD) Board of Education held a meeting Monday night to approve the closures of several schools. Effective for the 2025-26 school year, four elementary schools and two middle schools will shut down. ARUSD Superintendent Germán Cerda said the decision stems from a $20 million budget deficit -- citing a "significant decline" in enrollment and expiration of COVID relief funds.
