New Benefit of Ozempic recorded, Reducing Alcohol and Opioid Addiction

Ozempic, primarily known for its applications in managing Type 2 diabetes and facilitating weight loss, has unveiled an intriguing potential benefit: the reduction of alcohol and opioid addiction. A comprehensive study analyzing health records from over 1.3 million individuals with substance use disorders indicates that those using Ozempic exhibited significantly lower rates of alcohol binging and opioid overdoses compared to their counterparts who were not on the medication . This raises important questions about the pharmacological mechanisms at play, particularly how these medications might influence cravings and reward-seeking behaviors within the brain.

Ozempic is one of several medications, called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists or GLP-1 RAs, that are prescribed to treat diabetes, obesity, and other weight-related medical conditions. The medications interact with a region of the brain – the mesolimbic system – to reduce appetite and trigger satisfaction after eating.

mimic GLP-1's structure, semaglutide can also activate these receptors, inducing feelings of fullness while delaying the emptying of our stomachs. In other words, it makes us less hungry and, therefore, less likely to overeat.

This new large-scale human study looked at 503,747 people with a history of opioid use disorder (OUD), of which 8,103 had a prescription for a GLP-1 RA or GIP. The study found that people with OUD who had a GLP-1 RA or GIP prescription had a 40% lower rate of opioid overdose compared with those who did not have a prescription.

The study also looked at 817,309 people with a history of alcohol use disorder (AUD), of which 5,621 had a prescription for a GLP-1 RA or GIP. The study found that people with AUD who had a GLP-1 RA or GIP prescription had a 50% lower rate of alcohol intoxication compared with those who did not have a prescription.

Moreover, findings published in *Addiction* further substantiate these claims, revealing a 40% decrease in opioid overdose risk and a remarkable 50% reduction in instances of alcohol intoxication among users of Ozempic . While causation cannot be firmly established through this observational data, it suggests that medications designed for weight management may also have ancillary benefits for individuals grappling with addiction. These insights warrant further investigation through randomized clinical trials to better understand the long-term implications and possible risks associated with such treatments.
