The assassination of Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and prominent leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Mumbai. Siddique was shot dead by three assailants, raising immediate concerns about law and order in the region. With two suspects already apprehended and a third still at large, the Mumbai Crime Branch is undertaking a comprehensive investigation into the murder. This incident has ignited criticism from opposition leaders who argue that it reflects a deteriorating security situation in Maharashtra. Siddique was an MLA for three consecutive terms in 1999, 2004 and 2009. He was a minister of state for food and civil supplies, labour and FDA in the state government (2004-08), and was also a municipal corporator for two consecutive terms.
He has also served as the chairperson and senior vice-president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee and parliamentary board member of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
“My journey was with Indira Gandhi-Rajiv Gandhi-Sanjay Gandhi. The current Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is like my father. But sometimes some decisions have to be made in personal life,” Siddique had said before joining the NCP and thanked activists and leaders who supported him in his journey of 48 years in the Congress.
Mumbai was peaceful but such incidents are happening here now because there is no fear of the police in the city. The government has supported criminals," the Congress leader wrote in Marathi.
Video footage circulating on social media showing individuals tampering with evidence at the crime scene has further exacerbated public outrage . The police's handling of this high-profile case is under scrutiny as allegations arise regarding potential connections to organized crime elements like the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Given Siddique's long-standing ties to Bollywood figures such as Salman Khan, motives ranging from contract killing to business rivalry are being explored .
