Flyers commenced their 2024 NHL season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, securing the win in a shootout. The match highlighted both teams' competitive spirit, showcasing impressive performances from key players. Morgan Frost emerged as the hero for the Flyers, netting the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout. In regulation play, Tyson Forester and Cam York contributed to Philadelphia's scoreline, establishing an early lead before entering extra time .
Tyson Forester and Cam York scored in regulation for the Flyers, and Samuel Ersson finished with 24 saves.
Teddy Blueger and Nils Hoglander scored for the Canucks, and Kevin Lankinen made 30 saves in his Vancouver debut.
Rogers Arena had a special guest in the house as long-time defenceman Alex Edler was honoured as he signed a one-day contract to retire as a Canuck.
Not even two minutes into the game, Tyler Myers gets in an awkward collision with Flyers forward Joel Farabee, goes down on the ice, and stays there. He would need help from his linemates to get off the ice and trainers down the tunnel as he was unable to put any weight on his right leg
Canucks the 1-0 lead.
Philly tied the game at 17:24 of the first period. On their first power play of the game, Egor Zamula started a quick puck-movement sequence. After taking a pass from Joel Farabee, Tyson Foerster (PPG, 1st) scored to tie the game at 1-1. The assists went to Farabee and Bobby Brink.
finally with Zamula, there were a ton of shifts where he was noticeably bad in this one. Ristolainen was largely fine in this one, but the Zamula half of the pair felt just a bit behind. Similar to the criticism of Brink, Zamula fell into a lot of last year’s bad habits, namely his questionable decision making with the puck and struggle to deal with forecheckers. He nearly gave the game away on a last minute turnover to Elias Petterson, and there were numerous other mishaps throughout the game as well. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Andrae check in over the next couple of games if this continues.
