Cissy Houston passed away aged 91

Cissy Houston, a celebrated figure in the music industry, passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a profound legacy that spanned several decades. Known primarily for her contributions to gospel music, Houston's career was multifaceted; she sang backup for iconic artists such as Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin while also establishing herself as a solo artist . Cissy, mother of the late Whitney Houston and a legendary gospel singer herself, died at 91 on Monday, Oct. 7 at her home in New Jersey. She was under hospice care for Alzheimer's disease.

"The family is taking it hard," says the insider. "They’re getting through, but it is very difficult right now."

The source added that Cissy (born Emily Drinkard) "lived a long, blessed life."

She sang with the vocal group the Sweet Inspirations, who sang backup for soul legends including Otis Redding, Dionne Warwick, and The Drifters.

The group was formed in 1963, just as Cissy was about to give birth to her daughter Whitney.

They also appeared on Van Morrison's hit Brown Eyed Girl, and sang background vocals on The Jimi Hendrix Experiences's Burning of the Midnight Lamp, both in 1967.

Houston last sang with the Sweet Inspirations at an Elvis Presley show in Las Vegas in 1969. We lost the matriarch of our family,” shared daughter-in-law Pat Houston in a statement from the family. Cissy died while under hospice care of Alzheimer’s disease, which she had been battling for a number of years.
