DENVER (KDVR) — A Boulder middle school teacher was arrested on charges of sexual assault on a child, and the school's former principal was arrested on charges of failing to report the alleged crime. On Thursday, FOX31 received the letter that was sent to the parents of Manhattan Middle School. The middle school is in the Boulder Valley School District. Current Principal Kristen Lewis said math teacher Dan Greenberg, 55, was arrested on charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, child abuse and harassment. Additionally, former Principal John Riggs was arrested on a misdemeanor count of failure to report. The school’s principal said Riggs retired at the end of the 2021-22 school year.
According to an affidavit obtained by FOX31, the alleged incidents involved a student at the middle school who claimed Greenberg inappropriately touched her, and Riggs is accused of not reporting the case as required by law.
FOX31 reached out to Greenberg’s attorney for a statement and received the following: “We generally don’t talk about our cases outside of court, but when all the facts become known, justice will be done,” attorney Craig Truman said.
FOX31 reached out to Riggs through email early Friday morning and has not heard back.
Affidavit: Investigation finds other student victims
On Dec. 16, 2021, a student attending the middle school during the 2021-22 school year reported to Riggs that Greenberg had inappropriately touched her, Riggs failed to properly report the case to law enforcement or Child Protective Services as required by law and Greenberg was not placed on administrative leave, according to the affidavit. After this incident, Greenberg received yearly training.
On March 5, a mandatory report was made by an assistant principal at the middle school where an investigation found numerous other students who had been victims of Greenberg, and the incidents were classified as inappropriate touching and “determined to be harassment and unwanted,” according to the affidavit.
“The investigations have shown that Daniel Maxwell Greenberg was involved with numerous non-consensual acts of inappropriate touching of his male and female students,” the affidavit reads.

Greenberg worked as a teacher at Casey Middle School from 2001-14. He then worked as a teacher on a special assignment as a math specialist and instructional specialist from 2014-19. Finally, he worked at Manhattan Middle School until he went on leave.
Riggs began his career with the Boulder Valley School District at Nevin Platt Middle School from 1999-2010. He then taught at Broomfield Heights Middle School from 2010-13. He worked as the principal at Manhattan Middle School from 2013 until he retired in 2022.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and we are deeply troubled by these charges,” Lewis said in an email to parents.
