Up here on Black Bart Trail there’s an object near the high point of our road. The object is black & dusty & likely made of forever plastic. It appeared last summer, disappeared in mid- fall and reappeared this June. You need to be on foot and keeping an eye on your off-leash labradoodle to glimpse in your eye’s corner a summer sunset casting light on the object. Unobscured by authorial whimsey, the object looks like a piece of junk with a 2-foot piece of Simpson Strong Tie poking up from a few inches of water. For a long moment the rubbish reflects a certain slant of light to one’s willing eye. For that speculative moment junk becomes mysterious, gleaming, attractive. Its very attractivenes
