"Neighbours stalwart" Janet Andrewartha dies aged 72

Janet Andrewartha, a distinguished figure in the Australian television landscape, has passed away at the age of 72. Best known for her role as Susan Kennedy on the long-running soap opera "Neighbours," Andrewartha's contributions to the show and the broader entertainment industry have left an indelible mark. Her portrayal of Susan, a character characterized by resilience and complexity, resonated with audiences and showcased Andrewartha's exceptional acting skills. Over her extensive career, she became synonymous with the series, which has been pivotal in shaping Australian popular culture.

Neighbours" began in 1994 when she first appeared as Susan Kennedy. The character evolved over time, navigating various personal and familial challenges that mirrored real-life issues faced by viewers. Andrewartha starred in Australian television and theatre productions since the early 1980s, returning to Neighbours several times after her initial seven-year stint.

Actress Jackie Woodburne, known for playing Susan Kennedy on the iconic soap, said she would miss her friend of 45 years.

Woodburne, also known for female inmate soap Prisoner and hospital-set The Young Doctors, said: “Janet was one of the finest actors of her generation but, more than that, she was an extraordinary woman.

“Passionate, political, curious, delightfully eccentric, generous and fun. To me she was a steadfast friend for over 45 years.

“I will miss her every day.”

Stefan Dennis, known for playing mean businessman Paul Robinson in Neighbours, wrote: “So very upset to lose the lovely Janet.

“Everyone at Neighbours is deeply saddened by the passing of Janet Andrewartha,” read the post. “Beloved by viewers for her role as Ramsay Street’s Lyn Scully, Janet will be remembered for her wide body of work.”

Andrewartha’s Lyn remained a prominent feature in the series until late 2006, together with her on-screen family: daughters Stephanie (Carla Bonner), Felicity (Holly Valance), and Michelle (Kate Keltie), and husband Joe (Shane Connor).
