Sweden Women and England Women faced off in a highly anticipated match that ended in a 0-0 draw. The game was part of the UEFA Women's European Championship qualifiers, with both teams looking to secure a spot in the upcoming tournament. The match was closely contested, with both teams displaying strong defensive performances throughout the game.
Sweden Women, known for their disciplined defense and technical prowess, put up a solid performance against England Women. Their organized backline made it difficult for England to create scoring opportunities, forcing them to rely on long-range shots and set pieces. Sweden's goalkeeper also played a crucial role in keeping England at bay, making several key saves throughout the match.
Georgia Stanway was England's best outfield player and looked most likely to instigate an opening goal, her cross just evading Alessia Russo in the first half before one shot of her own had Zecira Musovic scrambling and another hit the side netting either side of the break. However, Hampton, chosen ahead of Mary Earps again, was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the match, denying Filippa Angeldahl from close range despite being unsighted and doing the same from distance, the Real Madrid midfielder's shot moving all over the place before being parried away.
The holders had left themselves an alpine mountain to climb when they lost at home against France in May and slipped down to third in the “group of death”. But since then they have defied this toughest of qualifying draws to secure a place among the 16 sides that will contest the finals next summer, without the need to participate in the lengthy playoff process between October and December. That unenviable fate now awaits the Olympic silver medallists Sweden.
Italy thrashed Finland 4-0 to top Group A1 on nine points with Netherlands, who drew 1-1 away to Norway in Bergen, also going through automatically.
In Group A2 Spain and Denmark had already secured direct qualification, with the World Cup champions closing out the campaign with a 2-0 win over Belgium, while the Danes defeated Czechia by the same scoreline.
Germany won Group A4 with 15 points form their six matches, but their 4-0 win over Austria was tainted by an injury to midfielder Lena Oberdorf. Iceland took second place, two points behind Germany thanks to a 1-0 win away to Poland.
