Election 2024: Thangam Debbonaire loses seat to Greens

Cultural by : (PRESSBEE) -

election rolled in, one of the most surprising outcomes was Thangam Debbonaire losing her seat to the Greens. This unexpected turn of events has sparked a wave of speculation and analysis among political commentators and academics alike.

Debbonaire, a long-standing Labour MP known for her advocacy on social justice issues, faced a tough challenge from the Green Party candidate who ran on a platform of environmental sustainability and climate action. The shifting priorities of voters in Bristol West played a significant role in this upset, as concerns about climate change took center stage in the election.

Carla Denyer in a landslide Bristol Central race.

It was one of the Green Party's main target seats at this election, with the challengers claiming that "a few Green MPs" in Parliament would be of huge importance in the event of an expected Labour landslide.

The secretary of state for culture, media and sport is responsible for overall strategy and policy across the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, including allocating grant-in-aid funding for the British Film Institute.

Thirteen different MPs held the position across the Conservatives’ 14 years in office; an increased frequency from the previous Labour government, which had five different culture secretaries from 1997 to 2010.

The Labour Party is nonetheless on course to win a huge parliamentary majority, meaning leader Keir Starmer will become Prime Minister on Friday.

In an enormous 28 point swing away from Labour, Ms Denyer took 24,539 votes to shadow culture secretary Thangham Debbonaire's 14,132.

Debbonaire's vote share was down 25.9%.

In polls leading up to the General Election on July 4, Ms Debbonaire was singled out as the only Labour incumbent expected to lose her seat in a humiliating blow - after she beat Ms Denyer at the 2019 election by a huge majority of 28,219 votes.

The results are a vindication for a highly focused campaign by the co-leaders, who set out their four target seats last autumn and have devoted most campaign resources towards them. Amid a wider effort to professionalise the party in England and Wales, Denyer and Ramsay, who have co-led since autumn 2021, have also gained more than 400 council seats across England.
