Thompson Fire in Butte County prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents from their homes. The fire quickly spread, fueled by dry conditions and high winds, posing a significant threat to both property and human life. The swift response of emergency services and local authorities ensured that residents were able to evacuate safely, although many were left uncertain about the fate of their homes.
In addition to the human impact of the fire, a small animal shelter in Butte County found itself at capacity as pet owners sought refuge for their furry companions. The shelter worked tirelessly to accommodate the influx of animals, providing food, water, and medical care as needed. This crisis highlighted the importance of including plans for pets in emergency evacuation procedures.
The Thompson fire broke out before noon Tuesday about 70 miles north of Sacramento, in and around the city of Oroville, in Butte County. It sent up a huge plume of smoke that could be seen from space as it grew to more than 5.5 square miles. There was no containment.
Butte County Fire Department said the firefighters had minor heat-related injuries. Another firefighter had injuries from the fire line. Three other firefighters were injured en route to the fire due to a crash in Oroville
Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency in response to the fire and federal funding was approved to help with firefighting efforts.
A viewer sent us video showing a burning hillside all around the iconic O, which stands for Oroville. Evacuees have been able to take some of their animals but have had to leave others behind.
We talked with one woman whose horse seemed under stress.
Cailynne Brewer is under an evacuation warning and went with her parents to their friend's house last night, busy to say the least.
Evacuation shelters have been opened at the Oroville Church of the Nazarene at 2238 Monte Vista Ave. and the Gridley Fairgrounds at 199 E Hazel St. in Gridley.
An evacuation shelter for small animals has been set up at 2279 Del Oro Ave. in Oroville, with a shelter for large animals operating at the Camelot Equestrian Park at 1985 Clark Road in Oroville.
