Anaheim Ducks made a strategic move by selecting Beckett Sennecke as the third overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. This decision was based on careful consideration of Sennecke's skills and potential impact on the team. As a college student studying sports management, I understand the importance of drafting players who can contribute to the success of a team.
Ducks recognized this potential and seized the opportunity to secure Sennecke for their roster.
In 63 games with Oshawa last season, Sennecke scored 27 goals and 68 points.
Though the 18-year-old was projected to go fifth overall in the latest draft rankings by Sportsnet's Jason Bukala, Sennecke appeared in disbelief after his name was called.
"It's obviously super emotional, I don't think I expected that," Sennecke told Sportsnet's Jeff Marek following his selection. "I think my agent knew more than me, but he didn't tell me. Obviously, I'm super happy to be a part of this organization.
Though the Ducks had been linked in murmurs to Sennecke, who said his game was similar to that of Nashville’s Filip Forsberg, he was widely projected to go several slots below No. 3. The broadcasters at the draft and even Sennecke himself were surprised to hear his name called so early at the 18,000-seat Sphere in Las Vegas.
Scott Niedermayer announce the pick.
“I didn’t think it was a possibility even, but obviously I’m super happy,” Sennecke told ESPN’s Leah Hextall during the broadcast.
The Sennecke pick was the first of a number of surprises in the top 12 picks, including a number of the top blueliners dropping - heck, in a class that was known for high-end defensemen, only one (Artyom Levshunov to Chicago) went in the top six selections. And the second - Carter Yakemchuk to Ottawa at No. 7 - wasn't the name many would have expected to go before the likes of Zeev Buium, Sam Dickinson and Anton Silayev.
But as the folks who work for NHL teams like to say, it's not about the number you were picked at, but what you do after that matters most. Now these kids officially have teams to impress.
