New Delhi airport, intense rain caused a tragic event as a roof collapsed, resulting in the death of one person. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of infrastructure maintenance and preparedness in dealing with extreme weather conditions.

The collapse of the roof highlights the potential dangers that can arise from heavy rainfall and inadequate structural integrity. It also underscores the need for thorough inspections and timely repairs to prevent such disasters from occurring.

All flight departures from Terminal 1 were temporarily suspended as rescuers cleared the debris to rescue anyone trapped there, the airport authority said.

Terminal 1 is used for domestic operations at New Delhi’s main airport.

The fire services control room said the injured were taken to a hospital.

“Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy of the old departure forecourt” collapsed at around 5 a.m., an airport authority statement said.

India's aviation regulator has advised airlines to accommodate passengers on alternate flights or offer them refunds.

The accident has impacted the travel plans of thousands, as most domestic flights take off from Terminal 1.

Some airlines have shifted flight operations to the remaining two terminals at the airport.

Delhi International Airport Limited said a technical committee had been formed to investigate the cause of the accident.

Dozens of flights were cancelled or diverted to other terminals after the roof collapse as airport authorities suspended all operations at Terminal 1, at least through Friday.

KinjaraRam Mohan Naidu pu announced government compensation of 2 million rupees ($24,000) for the family of the deceased taxi driver, and 300,000 rupees ($3,600) for the families of those injured.

Safety and construction standards in the country remain a concern. At the scene, Naidu told reporters that the collapsed roof was part of an older building opened in 2009 and that the building inaugurated by Modi “is on the other side”.

An inquiry has been ordered into the collapse, said the minister.

Opposition politicians slammed the prime minister after the incident, accusing him of going on an “inauguration spree” ahead of the polls, which concluded at the beginning of this month.
