Gena Rowlands celebrated actor from "A Woman Under the Influence" Has Alzheimer’s

Gena Rowlands is a celebrated actor known for her remarkable performances in films such as "A Woman Under The Influence." However, recent reports have revealed that she has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This news has saddened fans and the entertainment industry alike, as Rowlands' talent and presence on screen have left a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects memory, cognitive function, and behavior. The 2004 movie classic directed by Cassavetes starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love, but are kept apart by barriers of wealth and class. Their story is recounted years later by an elderly man played by James Garner to Rowlands, who is first identified a fellow nursing home resident with dementia. It’s later revealed that Garner and Rowlands are the married, older versions of the characters played by soulmates Gosling and McAdams.

Her son Nick Cassavetes, who directed the film, revealed his mom’s diagnosis to Entertainment Weekly. He told the publication that his mother is in “full dementia.”

Cassavetes also said it was “crazy” that his mother played a woman with dementia in the popular 2004 romantic comedy and now she’s struggling with the disease herself.

Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s,” he said.

Rowlands made 10 films with her husband, John Cassavetes, which included the 1974 film "A Woman Under the Influence" and "Gloria," in the 1980’s. 

She was nominated for an Oscar for both performances. Rowlands has also won four Emmys and her latest film work was in the 2014 comedy "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks," according to IMDB. 

A screen legend, Rowlands had a movie career that spanned nearly seven decades. She’s also a four-time Emmy winner and two-time Golden Globe winner. Rowlands is best known for her collaborations with her late husband, John Cassavetes, an actor and filmmaker whose movies include A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Gloria (1980). Rowlands received an honorary Academy Award in 2015 after being nominated twice.
