Eddie Murphy, the beloved comedian and actor, recently revealed that a fifth installment of the popular animated film series, Shrek, is already in the works. This news has sparked excitement among fans who have been eagerly awaiting a new addition to the franchise.
Since its debut in 2001, Shrek has become a cultural phenomenon, captivating audiences with its humorous and heartwarming storyline. The character of Donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy himself, has been a fan favorite and integral part of the series.
Murphy, who has played Shrek’s loyal companion across the series’ four mainline installments and various spinoff stories, spelled out his future with the franchise during an interview with Collider. He says that he’s already started working on the next chapter of the DreamWorks fantasy story.
Shrek is one of the best animated franchises of all time that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike and it’s now confirmed to be getting another sequel. Shrek 5 is in the works but not only that, a Donkey spin-off solo film and it’s all come straight from the Donkey’s mouth, Eddie Murphy.
Speaking in a recent interview on the press tour for his latest film ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”, he confirmed that a fifth “Shrek” is already well into production and should arrive in cinemas ahead of the franchise’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 2026.
The “Shrek” franchise released four feature films between 2001 and 2010. The original “Shrek” turned DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse studio with its $487 million worldwide gross. The movie became the first Oscar winner in the animated feature category. “Shrek 2” grossed $928 million. Both films competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
While “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” earned less acclaim than the first two movies, they still managed to gross $813 million and $752 million worldwide, respectively.
In addition, there’s a Christmas TV special “Shrek the Halls” and the 2010 Halloween special “Scared Shrekless.” The series “The Adventures of Puss in Boots” ran from 2015 to ’18 and originally debuted on Netflix, but is now streaming on Peacock.
Elsewhere, Murphy has another long-in-the-works sequel up next: “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” The fourth film in the comedy series that started in 1987 premieres July 3 on Netflix.
A Donkey spinoff movie about the sassy mule is an organic blockbuster: The two Puss in Boots movies combined grossed $1 billion which raises the total Shrek universe across six movies to $4 billion.
Back in January 2023, Murphy said he was open to doing a Shrek 5 and Donkey movie.
