F1 Spanish Grand Prix qualifying round, Lando Norris displayed an impressive performance by securing pole position ahead of Max Verstappen. This achievement is significant as it marks Norris's first career pole in Formula 1, showcasing his growing talent and potential as a top driver in the sport.
Norris's exceptional lap time not only outpaced Verstappen but also highlighted the competitive nature of the McLaren team this season. With strong performances from both Norris and teammate Daniel Ricciardo, McLaren has emerged as a formidable force on the grid, challenging traditional powerhouses like Red Bull and Mercedes.
Lando Norris claimed a second career Formula 1 pole position with a stunning late lap to deny Max Verstappen in the Spanish Grand Prix.
A 1:13.403 was Verstappen's benchmark, as Norris was up through sector two on the final lap, with the McLaren denying Verstappen a 40th pole by just 0.020s.
It is Norris's first pole since the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton was third for Mercedes, with George Russell fourth and home drivers Carlos Sainz sixth and Fernando Alonso 11th, but will start 10th once Sergio Perez's grid penalty is applied.
Pierre Gasly is a surprise seventh in his Alpine ahead of team-mate Esteban Ocon.
Sergio Perez qualified eighth but a three-place grid penalty from the Canadian GP knocks him back to 11th and promotes each of Ocon, Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso up one place.
Logan Sargeant also has a grid penalty - three places from impeding Stroll in qualifying - but as he qualified 20th he can't drop any positions.
Fernando Alonso could not break into Q3 at his home race, despite improving on his final lap; the Spaniard was mired in 14th before he crossed the line, but this only lifted him up to 11th.
Alonso thus starts Sunday's race against Valtteri Bottas, who had a glimpse of life outside of the drop zone after his final lap but this was not enough to stave off a late-session fall down the order into 12th.
Nico Hulkenberg also fell into the bottom five late on in Q2, joining Lance Stroll and Zhou Guanyu as the remainder of the drivers who failed to progress into the top 10 shootout.
