David Depape was recently found guilty of kidnapping and attacking Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul. The incident occurred when Depape approached Paul Pelosi outside a restaurant in San Francisco and forcibly took him to a nearby warehouse where he proceeded to assault him. This heinous act not only violated the rights of an innocent individual but also struck at the heart of our democracy, targeting the spouse of one of our nation's most prominent political figures.
The trial proceedings revealed damning evidence against Depape, including eyewitness testimonies and surveillance footage that clearly implicated him in the crime. The jury deliberated carefully before reaching their verdict, ensuring that justice was served for the victim and his family. Such acts of violence cannot be tolerated in any society, and it is imperative that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
David DePape has already been convicted on federal counts in the Oct. 28, 2022, break in and attack on Paul Pelosi, and DePape was sentenced to 30 years in prison in that case.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said after the guilty verdict was returned Friday afternoon.
The jury found DePape guilty of aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary, false imprisonment, threats against an elected official or their family, and preventing or dissuading a witness by force or threat, Jenkins said.
Nancy Pelosi, said the family was “in awe of their Pop’s bravery, which shone through again on the witness stand in this trial just as it did when he saved his own life on the night of the attack.”
“For nearly 20 grueling months, Mr. Pelosi has demonstrated extraordinary courage and fortitude every day of his recovery,” the statement added.
DePape’s public defender Adam Lipson told the jury during closing arguments that DePape was guilty of three of the charges but that prosecutors had not presented evidence to convict him of threatening a family member of a public official and aggravated kidnapping.
Prosecutors added those two charges in late May, as DePape’s federal trial was wrapping up.
A federal jury convicted DePape of assaulting a federal official’s family member and attempting to kidnap a federal official. On May 28, he was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison during an unusual resentencing hearing that resulted from judicial error. DePape will likely be deported back to Canada after he completes his punishment.
