Aston Villa 3-3 Liverpool

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Aston Villa. The Reds were trailing 3-1 with just minutes left on the clock, and their hopes of securing three points seemed to be slipping away. However, in a moment of sheer brilliance, Roberto Firmino managed to pull one back for Liverpool with a well-placed header.

As the clock ticked down, it was clear that Liverpool needed something special to salvage a draw from this match. And that's exactly what they got when substitute Diogo Jota found himself in the right place at the right time to slot home an equalizer.

Jhon Duran struck a dramatic late double as Aston Villa edged a step closer to securing UEFA Champions League football next season by hitting back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Liverpool at Villa Park.

The visiting Merseysiders were gifted an early advantage when Emiliano Martinez contrived to fumble Harvey Elliott’s deflected cross into his own net on two minutes.

Aston Villa do not quite have the Hollywood ending to their season but the watching Tom Hanks got an illustration that football can script stranger drama than his line of work. A three-minute double from Jhon Duran – perhaps a case of Duran Duran scoring – denied Jurgen Klopp a valedictory victory on the road in his final away game as Liverpool manager.

This will be Jurgen Klopp's penultimate match in the Reds dugout and he has a good record against Villa, having won eight and losing only one of his 10 league matches against them. That solitary loss was a memorable 7-2 defeat at an empty Villa Park in October 2020.

Liverpool having failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last nine league fixtures, but preference is for the Reds to pick up all three points.

The Aston Villa players will tuned into Tuesday’s Spurs-Man City game. Anything other than a Spurs win means Villa are into the Champions League.

“There’s some of us that have never been close to the Champions League in our life,” Villa captain John McGinn said. “We’ll have our Man City tops on tomorrow.”
