Marco Reus, the talented forward for Borussia Dortmund, has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of this season. This news has sent shockwaves through the football world, as Reus has been a key player for Dortmund for many years.
Reus joined Dortmund in 2012 and quickly became a fan favorite with his skillful play and leadership on the field. He has been instrumental in helping the team achieve success in both domestic and international competitions.
The 34-year-old Dortmund academy product rejoined the club from Borussia Mochengladbach in 2012 and has gone on to make 424 appearances so far, scoring 168 goals and contributing 128 assists.
“I’ve got to play in this wonderful stadium for 12 years. I’ve dedicated half of my life to this club, been through a lot of highs and lows – more highs, in my opinion,” Reus started saying in a video addressed to Borussia supporters, before officially breaking the news: “The club and I have come to the decision not to sign a contract extension.”
Dortmund and previously a part of the club’s youth setup, Reus returned to BVB from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012 and has since played 424 times for Die Schwarzgelben, scoring 168 goals and providing 128 assists in 12 years.
Reus has won two German Cups and two German Super Cups and reached the Champions League final in 2013 against Bayern Munich, where they were defeated 2-1.
Looking ahead, the player aims for Borussia to finish in the top five in the league standings, which grants access to Europe's top competition, and most importantly, dreams of securing the club's second Champions League title as they are one step away from the final after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of the semi-finals.
Dortmund travel to France on Tuesday for the return leg, hoping to reach the final for the first time since 2013. Dortmund won the trophy in 1997.
During his time at Dortmund, Reus has won two DFB-Pokals, two German Supercups and played an integral role in his side reaching the Champions League final in 2013. He was also named footballer of the year in Germany in 2012 and 2019.
Reus has also been capped on 48 occasions for Germany.
