Ohio Senate primary. With little name recognition and limited funding, Moreno's grassroots campaign focused on connecting with voters on a personal level and addressing their concerns directly. Her message of unity and inclusivity resonated with a diverse range of constituents, leading to a decisive victory over her more established opponents.
Moreno's win signals a shift in the political landscape, as voters increasingly seek out candidates who are not beholden to special interests or party politics. Her outsider status may prove to be an asset as she heads into the general election, where she will face off against the incumbent senator.
Just days before polls closed, Trump rallied for Moreno in Ohio, calling him an "America first champion" and "political outsider who has spent his entire life building up Ohio communities."
Sherrod Brown responded Tuesday night to Moreno's win posting on social media saying, "The choice ahead of Ohio is clear: Bernie Moreno has spent his career and campaign putting himself first, and would do the same if elected."
The general election fight is expected to be at least as fierce in a state that has trended Republican in recent years. With Democrats holding a tenuous 51-49 voting majority in the Senate but defending more seats than Republicans, Brown’s seat is expected to be a top GOP target. He is the lone Democrat holding a non-judicial statewide office in Ohio, a state that has moved steadily to the right during the Trump era.
Chuck Schumer, spent $2.7 million to elevate Moreno’s primary bid, with the idea that he would be the weakest against Brown this fall.
About two-thirds also said they’d consider Trump fit for office even if he’s convicted of a crime. And only about 3 in 10 acknowledged that President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election was legitimate.
Ohioans “know that Bernie Moreno always looks out for himself,” Brown said in an interview with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Tuesday night.
He alluded to Moreno’s deep pockets, saying “we’ll be outspent, but we’ll out-organize.”
A super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had signaled Moreno was Democrats’ preferred pick for Brown to take on when it dropped some $3 million in the race to boost Moreno.
