The San Francisco Giants have made a major move in the offseason by signing former Cy Young winner Blake Snell to a two-year, $62 million deal. This acquisition is sure to bolster their pitching staff and improve their chances of contending in the upcoming season.

Snell, who was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the San Diego Padres last year, brings with him a wealth of experience and talent. His impressive resume includes a Cy Young award in 2018 and an All-Star appearance in 2018 as well.

Scott Boras clients Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman, both of whom signed after spring training began -- gives him a higher average annual value in exchange for fewer length on his contract, but also allows him to re-enter free agency with the hope of experiencing a more robust market next offseason.

The Giants will now sport the top two finishers in 2023 NL Cy Young voting -- Snell and Logan Webb -- leading their rotation. Snell will provide more experience and stability on a staff that also includes Kyle Harrison, the top left-handed pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and Hicks.

he addition of Snell is another big move for a San Francisco team that gave South Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee a $113 million, six-year contract, sjgned Hicks to a $44 million, four-year deal and outfielder Jorge Soler to a $42 million, three-year contract, and then gave third baseman Matt Chapman a $54 million, three-year deal.

He was taken by Tampa Bay with the 52nd pick in the 2011 amateur draft and reached the major leagues in 2016. He won his first Cy Young in 2018, edging Justin Verlander after going 21-5 and 1.89 ERA.

With this signing, the Giants have now signed a whopping five of Fangraphs’ top-50 free agents this year: No. 5 (Snell), No. 7 (Chapman), No. 14 (Jung Hoo Lee), No. 19 (Jorge Soler), and No. 32 (Hicks). And that’s in addition to signing Tom Murphy and trading for Ray.

Snell was picked 52nd overall in the 2011 Draft by the Rays, with whom he remained for the first five seasons of his big league career. He was traded to San Diego in December 2020, where he played for three seasons before electing free agency in '23.
